Welcome to Auction User
We would stroll round the car park full of the car entries, peering through the closed windows of the cars, making a note of the ones we liked and then watching the vehicles parade themselves through the sales hall. Some were driven, others were pushed.
Then one day, my friend decided to buy a car………he chose a Ford Capri that he’d spotted in the car park, managed to get keys for it. Opened it up, and decides that it was worth a “punt”.
The car was about 10th in the queue so he decide to visit the toilet but left me instructions to bid upto £500 for the car, but he would be back in time.
Time went by, still no return, and the car was now in view…….
Now the car was “under the hammer”, still no mate…….
The auctioneer went through his usual speech about the vehicle history, warranty etc and the bids started…….200,250,300,350…….still no mate…..400,450……thought I had better get in on this, so I put my hand up……..”SOLD!” the auctioneer was pointing his Gavel at me!!!!
My mate returned about 30 seconds later, “What happened to the Capri?”
“Its yours!”
“What????” he said with a shocked look….”How much did I spend?” dreading my reply
“The 500 quid you told me to bid”
“Oh thats ok then, thought I had to do some explaining to the other half”
Over the years I have seen some good buys and some “goodbyes” on various auction programmes and thought that so many potential buyers go to auctions completely lacking in the knowledge that they should have had BEFORE parting with large some of hard earned money.
There is a mountain of different types of auctions, both on-line and in-house, obvious ones, obscure ones, fascinating ones and as such, each have to be researched individually.
I have put the more recognisable ones into different categories at the top of the page
